A printed ID card proves nothing on its own. Sempya ID verification puts a QR code on the card that anyone can scan to see whether the holder still works for the company — no app, no account, and an answer in about five seconds.
A company ID card is trusted far more than it deserves to be. It is shown at a mine gate, at a client's reception, at a bank counter, at the door of a house where someone has come to read a meter — and in almost every case the person looking at it has no way to check it. The card proves that somebody printed a card.
It gets worse quietly. Staff leave and keep their cards. Cards are lost and found by somebody else. A card printed three years ago says nothing about whether that person was dismissed last month. The employer knows all of this; the person at the gate does not.
What the service does
Sempya ID verification puts a QR code on each card. Scanning it with any phone camera opens a page that answers one question: is this card holder currently employed by this company?
The page shows the employer's own logo and name, the holder's photo, their name, job title, employee number and card serial, and a clear line saying where they stand. A card in good standing carries a green tick and the words Currently employed. If the person is suspended, the page says so in amber and tells the checker to contact the employer first. If they have left, or the card was cancelled, the page is red, shows no photo, and says plainly: do not accept this card.
Three things about that page matter more than they look:
- No app and no account. Whoever is holding the card scans it and reads the answer. There is nothing to install and nothing to sign into.
- It is the employer's page, not ours. The employer's logo, name and contact details come first, because queries about a card are the employer's to answer. We appear in one line at the bottom.
- It answers in about five seconds, which is the only reason anyone will actually do it at a gate.
What the employer sees
Behind the public page is a small HR site. There is no software to install there either — it is a web page, and signing in is a link sent to your work e-mail rather than yet another password.
HR uploads the staff list, uploads the file the card printer sends back, and presses confirm. That one step creates every card and links it to the right person, so a whole batch goes live together. After that the work is the work HR already does: mark someone suspended, mark someone as having left, add a photo, issue a card to a new employee. The public page follows within seconds of each change.
Photos are worth a note, because they are what makes a card check honest. A photo is never cropped automatically — a face is never cut off by a machine. The whole photo appears in the frame first, and HR zooms and moves it until it sits properly.
What it deliberately does not show
The public page shows what is needed to check a card and nothing else. It never shows an NRC number, an address, a phone number, a salary or an internal note. Those exist in the employer's own systems and have no business on a page that anybody with the card can open.
A card that does not exist and a card that does exist are answered the same way, so the page cannot be used to fish for valid card numbers. There are no cookies, no tracking and no third-party content on it at all.
The employer remains the data controller: it is their staff register, their cards and their decision about who is employed. Sempya processes that data on their behalf under a written agreement.
Where the cards come from
You can carry on using the printer you already use. We generate the codes, they go onto your existing card design, and every code is machine-read twice before a batch is accepted — at full size and shrunk to the size it will actually be printed, because a code that a phone cannot read is a card that cannot be checked.
One rule is worth stating plainly: the link on a printed card is permanent. Cards that are already in people's wallets keep working, and nothing we change later re-keys them.
Getting started
The service suits any employer whose staff are checked by people outside the company: mining and mining services, security firms, logistics, utilities, field sales, contractors working on client sites. It also gives you something useful in return — a register that is actually current, because the cards depend on it.
If you would like to see it, write to support@sempya.co.zm. We will walk you through the HR site with sample data, and tell you honestly what it would take to get your own cards issued.
Migration from Google or Microsoft included, backed up nightly.
