A tourism business collects in dollars, pays booking platforms in dollars, and carries a levy most other industries never see. Here's how Mosi Sunrise Lodge & Safaris handles it on CloudERP.
Tourism businesses in Zambia often deal in US dollars on both sides of the transaction — collecting from international tour operators, and paying international booking platforms. Mosi Sunrise Lodge & Safaris Ltd, a Livingstone lodge and one of our eighteen fictional reference companies, is built to show what that looks like in practice.
Where the complexity actually is
Mosi Sunrise carries a USD-denominated debtors control for its tour operator bookings, a USD bank account to receive them into, and a separate USD creditors control for what it owes international booking platforms — three dollar balances doing three different jobs. Guest deposits taken ahead of a stay sit against a dedicated bookings register, and Zambia's tourism levy appears as its own line alongside the more familiar statutory ones. Bar, kitchen and housekeeping stock, a buildings-heavy asset register, and two separate bank statements — one Kwacha, one dollar — complete a business that looks quite different from a typical Zambian trading company.
Fully onboarded, and transacting
Mosi Sunrise went through the same review and sign-off workflow described in our opening balances post, and has carried on since: a real quotation, order, invoice and payment on the selling side, a real purchase order, supplier bill and payment on the buying side, and — with three separate USD balances on the books — a month-end exchange rate revaluation across all of them.
